Common Engine Shutdown Issues

Our customers often say: "While driving, the engine suddenly shuts down. After that, I can still start the car, but it stalls again after about 1 kilometer. I try several times, and it still starts, but the problem continues." This is a common comment when customers tow their cars into our workshop.

This issue affects many Proton models including Saga, Iriz, Persona, Perdana, Exora, Waja, and Bezza, often indicating serious engine problems that require professional attention.

Why Does an Overheated Engine Shut Down But Still Restart?

Most modern cars have an overheat safety shutdown feature. When the engine temperature cools down slightly, the car can restart. However, this restart ability is limited, allowing only short-distance driving before the engine shuts down again.

This cycle of shutdown and restart is a protective mechanism, but it indicates a serious underlying issue that needs immediate attention to prevent permanent engine damage.

Cooling System Repairs and Engine Overhaul

Can replacing cooling system parts fix overheating? Yes. Early detection of overheating and timely replacement of faulty parts such as the radiator, water pump, cooling fan, thermostat, and damaged hoses or pipes can prevent engine overheat.

But if the engine continues to overheat from ongoing driving, serious damage is likely. The first sign is usually a blown head gasket, commonly known as "gasket bakar." At this point, we need to remove the cylinder head and inspect its condition. For mild damage, a top engine overhaul can restore engine performance at a lower cost compared to a full rebuild.
